Gray Snow Mold occurs over the winter months and early spring under snow cover, while the ground is not frozen. The fungus attacks the blades of the grass, but does not usually affect the crown or the roots. This minimizes overall damage, and usually allows for the grass to bounce back once the spring growing weather begins.
While golf courses often spray the greens with chemical fungicides to control snow molds, home lawns are rarely, if ever in need of such drastic preventative measures. In the spring, a simple raking of the affected patches will allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the soil and allow the crowns and roots of the grass to regenerate new plants.
