Fairy Ring is one disease that is generally simply tolerated due to the near complete lack of effective control measures. The fungus starts in a small circle, then grows outward, creating an ever expanding circular ring. As it moves on, the center area remains largely unaffected. In many cases, the fungus merely releases nitrogen (a main component of fertilizer), thereby leaving a darker green ring of grass in its wake. In more severe cases, the ring can actually kill the grass, leaving a larger and larger dead ring each season.
Generally speaking, Fairy Ring is best masked by fertilizing adequately so the rest of the lawn appears equally, or nearly as green as the ring itself.
Efforts to control Fairy Ring chemically or culturally have remained elusive thus far.
