Dollar spot gained its name from the silver dollar sized splotches it would create on golf greens, which are particularly susceptible to this disease. Many home lawns, especially those high in Kentucky Bluegrass content are similarly susceptible, but the longer grass length and thicker blades makes for less consistent patches that are slightly more difficult to identify. Dollar spot tends to be more prevalent during warmer months, lower fertility, and plenty of water.
While fungicides can certainly offer control over this disease, we far prefer to use a more natural, cultural approach. Balanced fertility, thatch control through regular core aerations, and good selection of grass species all help keep Dollar spot from becoming anything more than a few passing patches of straw colored grass.
