Just as with humans, animals, and all other plants, grass is susceptible to diseases. Usually these diseases are caused by a specific variety of fungus, which is already naturally present in the soil . So why does the disease become a problem at one time but not another?
Each disease causing fungi is best suited to specific environmental conditions. For example, Pythium (Pythium aphanadermatum) prefers sauna-like conditions with intense heat, sitting water, and high humidity. When conditions like this arise some years in August, the fungus begins to thrive instead of just survive. It attacks the grass plants and causes irreparable damage very, very quickly. Fortunately, when temperatures are more moderate the pythium fungus merely survives, lying in wait for the next spell of hot, wet weather.
So, does your lawn have a disease problem now? It’s certainly possible. Most lawns get at least one problem every year. Normally, several kick in at different times. Click on the appropriate season to the left in order to learn more about what’s eating your lawn.
